About Us
Lupton Chapel has a very long association in the metropolitan St. Louis area. Founded in 1905 by Clayton R. Lupton Sr. as the C.R. Lupton Undertaking Company, the original location was located at 4449 Olive Street. This location, designed and built by Mr. Lupton, was in the City of St. Louis just west of Grand Boulevard and was the community's first funeral chapel. Mr. Lupton came to St. Louis from Mexico, Missouri where he served as Mayor from 1890 to 1896. His interest in people was more than political and he found a greater challenge by helping people when a death occurred in their family.
Clayton Lupton, Sr. displayed a keen foresight about his business and the trend of local population movement when he purchased ground for the present chapel at 7233 Delmar Boulevard in University City, Missouri. St. Louis was moving westward but he did not live long enough to see his dream come true. Clayton R. Lupton, Sr. died in 1932 and the company was then directed by his two sons, Clayton R. Lupton, Jr. and John (Jack) Lupton. In 1938 Clayton, Jr. and Jack Lupton built the new facility in their father's memory located at the site their father had selected. Under their leadership it became a goal to achieve the excellence in service for every funeral matched with the finest professional ability and understanding coupled with gracious conduct and dignity. Jack Lupton died in 1957 and Clayton Lupton, Jr. passed away in 1962.
In 1962 Mr. Donald K. Muschany, the current manager for C.R. Lupton Undertaking Co., secured the business from the Lupton family and incorporated Lupton Chapel. Mr. Muschany added an east wing to the building with additional state rooms, lounges and offices. In 1972 Mr. Del J. Sherman was hired to manage Lupton Chapel and after the death of Donald K. Muschany in 1979, Mr. Sherman secured ownership of the company from the Muschany family. Mr. Sherman is a co-founder and President of An Association of St. Louis Owned and Operated Funeral Homes. In 1986 Mr. Sherman's son Stephen J. Sherman joined him in keeping Lupton Chapel a family and locally owned and managed funeral home. Today at Lupton Chapel the tradition continues with Del J. Sherman as President and his son Stephen J. Sherman as Vice President. Together, father and son work as a team, continuing to ensure that Lupton Chapel provide the communities and families it serves with the excellence in service for every funeral. Lupton is a founding member of An Association of St. Louis Owned and Operated Funeral Homes, a member of the Missouri Funeral Directors Association (MFDA), member of the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) and a member of the Better Business Bureau since 1984. Lupton Chapel observed its centennial in 2005.
